  • This is healthy.

One by one, you change to the higher capacity HDD mah, how to mix drives of different capacity in a nice NAS?

You got 7 HDDs so far....go buy the 8th Toshiba HDD and then transfer all data to The Toshiba drives by forming new STATIC volume there.  Don't trust all your data to the SHR thingy because you don't know how is Synology is handling it.

Then you will have original data and backup data on the same NAS.

  • Looks like I need to enlist your expertise in the formation of a new RAID volume style..
Years back I just left it to the automatic Synology OS to do the SHR Thingy..
Now at wits end trying to figure this out..
The new Synology 1821+ is doing great, with 32Gb of Ram... But I guess the old Hitachi 6Tb HDD's are crapping out at one go now...

Probably drive controller not replying to SATA requests lah. Probably Synology SW programmer initialise variable to -1. Since no reply from HDD, remains as -1. No big deal.

It could have easily been 0, or -99, or -999,
