Are you an Audiophile ?

Am I an audiophile ? This is the question of the week to which I am struggling to find an answer.

Let me share with you why this question is bothering me. My network player Cambridge Audio 851N recently shows sign of putting up a white flag after almost 6 years never switched off. As an ordinary human being, I am a denier , I opened it up , blew two can of contact cleaner, and prayed. To my foolish experience, my prayer was not answered. Leaving without no much choice , I send my player to service centre after that walked around the Adelphi last week.

At service centre, the technician was a bit shock after knowing that my player was almost 6 years and kindly explained to me that usually people ( Audiophile ) change their equipment every two to three years. Fine, I told myself, I took it with pitch of salt. I might change my partner that fast and easy but not my equipment  ;D

Headed to the Adelphi, met the sale man who sold me almost all of my current system and hadn't met him for about 3 years. He was shocked to learn that I haven't changed much of my equipment and thought I should be in second or third time changing them.

While I was sourcing for new network player , in case my current one could not hold it breath , I was again told "audiophile change their equipment every two to three years".

To stair the muddy water, AndrewC yesterday implied that I must be an Audiophile else I won't have written or own such equipment. ( I have no personal feeling, believe me ).

So as usual, I open up dictionary : Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary 3rd Edition.

No entry !

WTH ? There must be an entry for word like : Audiophile

So I turn to Oxford English Dictionary 2nd Edition ; no there is no entry, but in the entry audio suffix -phil

Code:
a devotee of high-fidelity reproduction of sound (chiefly U.S.);

For the second times, AndrewC is right ?

I won't give up, so I google searched. The result : lot but mostly the same meaning.

On Sony : Five Ways to Tell That You Are An Audiophile

- You?re Familiar with Audiophile Buzzwords and Audio History
  Ah not really.

- You Are a Know-it-all Audiophile
  Definitely not.

- Your Dream Job is to be an Audio Engineer
For fun yes, as a career no, in my teenage. ( to impress girls usually )

- You Own All the Newest Audiophile Equipment
  No

- You Crave a Behind-the-scenes Look at Music Gadgets
  No

So by this ruler, I am not an Audiophile.

I asked around and here are answers:

- owing expensive power cord, interconnect ( nothing is less than a few thousand dollars )
- owing lots of CDs, LPs
- owing hi-end equipment ( nothing is less than ten thousand dollars )
- having treated the listening room ( room treatment, absorber, diffuser , active bass trap, so on ... )
- changing equipment and accessories very often

Again, by these definitions , I am not an Audiophile. So :

What is your perception of Audiophile ?

Eh bro, no need to guess, research or take any test. If u are a regular poster in an audio forum u confirm audiophile liao. I have long given up the notion that I am just a music lover. Ask any normal music lover how much they're willing to spend on a sound system. My guess is that we spend at the very very least, ten times that average amount most music lovers will spend. Guilty as charged lah  ;D

Hahaha.... Exactly! Wayang so much, but the posts here and at Xtremeplace previously, and the system you own clearly demonstrates an indisputable behaviour and desire to associate with a community of Audiophiles. Hence by definition, you are one of us!! ;D

By OED entry , I have to agree with you yes, I'm an audiophile,  but not by the definition of chasing something out of the range and not changing equipment every 2-3 years.

No no no no no.. owning the same equipment for 2 to 3 years does not exempt a person from being called an audiophile. Its the amount of money u spend on yr equipment, the amount of time u spend in an av forum  ;D

Maybe I'll create my own list of what makes u an audiophile..

1 You don't buy your hifi from Courts or Harvey Norman

2 You will spend time to find the best spot to place yr loudspeakers

3 You go to an internet av forum regularly (whether u post or not)

4 You talk about soundstage, black background, imaging, transparency, details or stuff like that

5 Your music are not in MP3 format

6 Your family, relatives, normal friends or colleagues roll their eyes or express their shock or amazement
when they found out how much you have spent on your equipment

7 You find some recordings to be of poor quality that normal music fans don't have an issue with

8 You have visited an av show or have gone to someone's home to listen to his hifi setup

9 You have bought a hifi magazine at least once (for older audiophiles)

10You don't think Bose makes good hifi

;D

Thats a rubbish definition - I haven?t changed any component in my main system in 8 years (not counting firmware updates), I can assure you I?m a hard core Audiophile/Musicphile.

CBT's qualification list is far better  ;D

The only thing I change before 3 years is my cartridge. And this is due to wear and tear. twice I have been forced to change sooner due to an unfortunate accident to the cartridge.

My other components have been changed at every 5 years on longer. But recently I have not had any reason to upgrade. My turntable is coming to unchanged for 15 years. The arm has seen 3 changes and cartridges more.

Bought 15 years ago, and is still in production unchanged. Only the price has risen. Utterly reliable and well built. Only maintenance is a drop of 3-in-1 once a year, belt change every 3 years, and occasional silicone ring change when breaks. Over 15 years, 1 ring broke.

The thing is built to last. It arrived in a hefty wooden carton where even the wood was certified as treated. To last decades.

I was starting to lose faith in longevity of equipment.
Your statement gives me some assurance :-* thank you.

Regular maintenance is the heart of longevity,  that's what I believe.
