Am I an audiophile ? This is the question of the week to which I am struggling to find an answer.
Let me share with you why this question is bothering me. My network player Cambridge Audio 851N recently shows sign of putting up a white flag after almost 6 years never switched off. As an ordinary human being, I am a denier , I opened it up , blew two can of contact cleaner, and prayed. To my foolish experience, my prayer was not answered. Leaving without no much choice , I send my player to service centre after that walked around the Adelphi last week.
At service centre, the technician was a bit shock after knowing that my player was almost 6 years and kindly explained to me that usually people ( Audiophile ) change their equipment every two to three years. Fine, I told myself, I took it with pitch of salt. I might change my partner that fast and easy but not my equipment ;D
Headed to the Adelphi, met the sale man who sold me almost all of my current system and hadn't met him for about 3 years. He was shocked to learn that I haven't changed much of my equipment and thought I should be in second or third time changing them.
While I was sourcing for new network player , in case my current one could not hold it breath , I was again told "audiophile change their equipment every two to three years".
To stair the muddy water, AndrewC yesterday implied that I must be an Audiophile else I won't have written or own such equipment. ( I have no personal feeling, believe me ).
So as usual, I open up dictionary : Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary 3rd Edition.
No entry !
WTH ? There must be an entry for word like : Audiophile
So I turn to Oxford English Dictionary 2nd Edition ; no there is no entry, but in the entry audio suffix -phil
For the second times, AndrewC is right ?
I won't give up, so I google searched. The result : lot but mostly the same meaning.
On Sony : Five Ways to Tell That You Are An Audiophile
- You?re Familiar with Audiophile Buzzwords and Audio History
Ah not really.
- You Are a Know-it-all Audiophile
Definitely not.
- Your Dream Job is to be an Audio Engineer
For fun yes, as a career no, in my teenage. ( to impress girls usually )
- You Own All the Newest Audiophile Equipment
No
- You Crave a Behind-the-scenes Look at Music Gadgets
No
So by this ruler, I am not an Audiophile.
I asked around and here are answers:
- owing expensive power cord, interconnect ( nothing is less than a few thousand dollars )
- owing lots of CDs, LPs
- owing hi-end equipment ( nothing is less than ten thousand dollars )
- having treated the listening room ( room treatment, absorber, diffuser , active bass trap, so on ... )
- changing equipment and accessories very often
Again, by these definitions , I am not an Audiophile. So :
What is your perception of Audiophile ?
Are you an Audiophile ?
