*Update to my post: Detection of VS10 DV video resolved after setting the color settings recommended by MarkSwift on Zidoo forum.
My quick prelim impressions of the Z9X after playing familiar scenes. Referenced with:
1) Oppo 203 (my reference player)
2) Zidoo X9S (pre-owned)
My display is a LG C7 OLED TV. SDR calibrated to reference and HDR partially calibrated. HDMI cables - all capable of supporting 4k / HDR/ DV.
HDMI Path: Z9X HDMI OUT >> Denon AVR X8500H HDMI IN >> DENON AVR X8500H HDMI OUT >> DISPLAY
PRELUDE
- In my previous Zidoo X9S unit, while the file support was excellent, my major complaint is that the SDR and HDR material, the colors looks crushed and the PQ was a MAJOR disappointment, versus the Oppo 203.
- The X9S unit "EQ-ed" the colors significantly. The video motion panning was also disappointing on the X9S compared to Oppo 203.
- So Oppo 203 has remained my reference player for both PQ and SQ.
- I was looking fwd to see if the PQ on the Z9X is improved and solve the PQ issues of the X9S.
MOVIE AUDIO SQ
- HD multi channel audio is superb.
- Comparable to the Oppo 203 and no major noticeable difference.
SDR PQ (without VS10 engine engaged)
- On the Z9X, the SDR PQ is not good when played without VS10 engine engaged.
- Colors and blacks are crushed and white levels are also koyak.
- The video motion panning is also not good, not smooth, and there are issues (e.g. some stutter).
- But, compared to the X9S' SDR PQ, there is an improvement.
Winner: Oppo 203
VS10 ENGINE ENGAGED PQ (UPCONVERSION OF SDR AND HDR MATERIAL TO DV)
- On the Z9X, once the VS10 engine on Z9X is enabled on SDR and HDR, my OLED TV detected DV signal and displayed DV video output.
- With this, there was a big improvement in the PQ as compared to without VS10 engaged! Day and night difference I would say.
- In terms of video motion panning, with VS10 engine engaged, it seems smoother and stutter minimised as compared to VS10 engine not being engaged. Wow this VS10 engine is solid.
- skin tones are also slightly richer/ warmer. Nice
As compared to Zidoo X9S,
- Z9X wins hands down for PQ.
As compared to Oppo 203,
- I felt Oppo 203's PQ is better and more balanced. Esp for SDR sources.
- The VS10 engine on the Z9X, although it produces DV output and colors look more rich/exciting and had more pop on SDR materials, it is exciting to enjoy at the start, but... over a longer viewing period, it causes viewing fatigue.
- In very dark scenes, it causes some very dark areas to be illuminated which may not be the intended effect of the producer.
- playing very dark or very bright scenes on the Oppo 203 still had the best balance of black and colors accuracy.
Winner: Oppo 203
But, overall, the Z9X with the VS10 engine engaged, the PQ is pretty good. Without VS10 Engine, it is not so good. BUT.... seriously, at this price point of $200+, the Z9X is indeed very good already and exceeded expectations. Comparing it to the Oppo 203, may not be a completely fair comparison, but it shows that the Z9X with the VS10 engine engaged is no slouch.
